Once a towering identity in Bollywood, Yash Raj Films (YRF) is now the butt of all jokes and subject of ridicule. Even their latest film, starring the so-called A-list actor Saif Ali Khan and a true A-lister Rani, failed to create any box office magic. At a time like this, one would expect a knock-out film that begins its knock-out performance from the time it’s music debuts. In this context, the music of Bachna Ae Haseeno (BAH) is anything but knock-out. It is totally unimpressive.
The album has six soundtracks. Four of them are slow to medium paced numbers and two of them are fast numbers. Most of the songs sound like re-mixes because they have the same beat, only the pace of this same beat varies. Ahista Ahista (Lucky Ali’s voice is refreshing, ok tune), Bachna Ae Haseeno (kishore kumar is a classic, routine remix beat), Lucky Boy (another wannabe pop song with same routine remix-type beat—the ‘luuucckky boy’ is cool), Small Town Girl (tries very hard to sound like Jhoom Barabar Jhoom). Jogi Mahi has the dhol beats for a change, average tune, slightly melancholic. Khuda Jaane is a nice melody number that is good to hear; KK brings it to life.
With such an average music album, a cast devoid of star-power (no, Ranbir Kapoor is not a star, neither is Deepika. They both are popular only for their affair/relationship), and fizz-less promos…it makes me go Bachna Ae Yash Raj! [read good luck Yash Raj!]

Apparently, Ranbir Kapoor loves the three women at three different phases of his life between 18-30 (oh god…does Ranbir really have the stuff in him to pull off such a role?). The only traces of excitement in the promos were because it appeared that the hero is playing around with three ladies at one go…now if this story is really true about playing with the ladies at different stages…it will surely take away from the fizz. The music of BAH was actually “bah!”. It was grating to the point that it sounded like Anand Milind churned it out on a lazy day. I was so surprised to discover that people I admire for their freshness, Vishal Shekhar, were responsible for this uninterested score. The sound was so stale and the only saving grace was bars of the original RD Burman song appearing during key scenes of the movie.
Pity they wasted singers like Lucky Ali on an album that could have been the next “Bluffmaster”
I am shocked to read so-called professional reviews rating the songs and movie both at 4 stars and beyond. Just shows what a well-oiled PR machinery can achieve, when critics are for sale. Thank god for blogs to give us the true picture 😉
