Dev D Movie Review— This Devdas film is a ‘D’ for Disaster

mrinkenti1February 6th, 2008 would have been the sadest day for Sarat Chandra had he been alive to see what is easily the worst adaption of his classic work. In fact, he would have died all over again the moment Abhay Deol came up with this concept of doing a multiplex-film and put in the Devdas framework for recognition. A few minutes before the interval, as Dev enters a shady night club/bar, we are shown a large potrait of SRK’s classic Devdas get-up at the entrace and thats when you realize what you are actually missing and what total trash the Abay Deol-Anurag Kashyap combo is showing you in the name of Devdas. Dev D is utter nonsense and total trash in the name of New and Innovative Cinema.

devdposter2It is actually not the same basic storyline of the classic. Only a few names and the basic thread of Dev, Paro, a misunderstanding, separation, and eventually Dev becoming an alcoholic and waster resemble the original (the first 45 minutes to be precise). Dev and Paro are childhood friends, Dev goes to London and both are desperate for each other. So desperate that Dev asks over the phone if she “touches” herself, then asks her to send her naked photos, which she does by clicking, getting them developed at a photo studio and then to a cyber cafe to scan and send them. Characters openly use words like fuc*, sex, have you and paro done that? etc. Is is the New Cinema that critics are talking (some even raving) about? To me it is plain cheap. Upon returning, Dev is sooo desparate that he begins to make-out with another woman in the marriage party in a poultry farm. He then hears other (desparate village) guys who tell Dev about how talented Paro is on bed etc. Even Paro is equally desparate for she arranges a make-out session in the middle of the field (nopes, nothing is shown), but Dev who takes these fake stories seriously and asks Paro to ‘FO’. She does and she does it happily with marriage. Upto this point it is watchable, but the moment Chanda’s character is announced, the film does down the drain.

Chanda is the daughter of a Canadian diplomat based in Delhi and gets involved in a MMS scandal with her boyfriend. That gets circulated all over and even her father sees it, they both fight over it, dad shoots himself, and the girl wanders all over the world from Delhi to Canada and back to Delhi to settle down with a highly advanced and reformed pimp. Chunni, the pimp, gives her full liberty of choice and promises to empower her through education by day and tele-sex work by night. Enter Dev whom Chunni discovers spending without limit in bars for liquor and drugs. Towards the end, Dev gets involved in a hit-and-run case with his BMW, then tries to escape from the law by buying out the taxi driver who also drinks like a fish, then goes to the himalayas with another dude on his bike, then decides to go back to delhi and finally all ends well with him finding Chanda. No, this Dev does not die; in fact, it looks like he enters a rehabilitaiton program. No point in the film do you ever feel sad for any of the character. You feel no love (or lust for that matter) between the characters of Dev and Paro or Chanda and Dev.

After the first 45 minutes the film is a total waste and drags on devdposter1endlessly till you wonder how it will end. Mahie Gill as Paro gives the best performance. Kalki Koechin as Chanda is a major let down for the film; the only part she is convincing is when she gets involved in the MMS scandal in her school. Abhay Deol does not impress; he remains mum most of the time. Hindi cinema has hit rock bottom in terms of actors or heroes as today we have Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol type baccha home-bred guys getting lead roles. Abhay Deol, with earphones, drugs, drinks, and a craving to distruck himself over his love, is by no means a youth icon. Except when an Amir Khan or a SRK film releases the industry as a whole is going through tough and rough times in terms of content and business. For this, I would blame the multiplex culture that gives opportunities for wannabe great and full-of-themselves directors like Anurag Kashyap who can’t come up with anything original and come up with trash in the name of New Cinema. It is films like Dev D, which run for a week or two on the curiosity factor, that are responsible for the complete lack of entertainment in Hindi cinema these days. Fortunately, for Anurag Kashyap the critics have been kind and did not spit at this film like they did for NO SMOKING.

Can there be some sort of  Remake Regulatory Authority that can prohibit such horrible remakes of classics (i would include SRK’s DON too)? Abhay Deol and Anurag Kashyap have simply made a shitty movie and the only reason audience are even remotely curious is because of the classic names like Dev and Paro. On the other hand, the combo should have made their shitty film with an original idea and loaded it up with erotic content, it would have worked better. For those who are still curious to watch Dev D expecting erotic content–there is nothing of that sort so drop the idea. The background music and a couple of songs are good; mostly rock, techno-punjabi style.

Mr. Inkenti’s Movienomics Verdict: Thumbs Down! Avoid.

Good critical review and analysis for a bad movie. Moving the idea of RRA (Remake Regulatory Authority) is funny and as well thoughtful. Making better use of teaching public policy.

    Hi

I think this movie has a great contemporary feel and is a far more intellectual movie than you are making it out to be. It has a lot of creativity in the reimagination of the plot, the music is fantastic and quite appropriately goes with the theme of grunge, popsy, post modernistic feel. It avoids the over hamming of the srk devdas which had nothing intellectual to offer, i watched it onlu for great sets and beautiful. The cinematography, the non linear plot and the difficult characterisation seem to have missed your mind. I strongly recommend that you broaden your movie repetoire by watching some of the classics, both hollywood and bollywood and also try and appreciate the contrarion viewpoint.

I think Anurag Kashyap had balls to make a film like this and hats off to him. Age of contemporary bollywood is here…finally!!

How non sensical is your blog..

Do you know that you need to develop something called “movie sense” to have a review of it. Who tpld ypu to compare it with devdas.. well, Sharukh’s devdas was good.. why? because of great costumes?? or great sets?? this is your level of analysis.. what do you mean by shady bar.. so what should he do.. show a hi fi decent bar?? does that exist..

See the technicalities of the movie.. so well presented.. neither a spoof of nor a tribute to devdas… its a classic in its own manner… the way he showed the sequences and raised the plot leaves the audience amazed…

And what do you call a classic.. you think cuz its a replica of your srk’s devdas.. so it cannot be a classic… just understand the purpose of the director first..
You wanna ban such movies.. so what do you wanna see.. those same stupid love stories of srk.. same cliched stories… or same hero giri by the actor… like srk shows in all his typical movies..
its people like you who justify the sorry state of indian cinema..
else. srk’s best performance was in swades and it was a flop.. why? cuz you wanna see gim shiver and say “i love you paro” have tht dramatic background music.. so tht u also can cry woth him..

Dev D is a class apart performance, especially by the director… tht also helped abhay deol to perform well..

I liked SRK’s Devdas; and I am big fan of SRK. But trust me, DevD is incredibly better than the melodramatic version of Devdas. DevD only follows the basic plotline of Devdas. It is a completely different take on the movie. Why can you not accept a different point of view? I feel that people like Dev exist today and it is highly possible that he would react in a similar way as shown in the movie, and that is what makes DevD so much relevant to the youth today. However one also needs to understand that this movie is made for a particular audience (multiplex audience as you call it), which is not wrong! A movie is a conversation, if the conversation is not meant for you, you will not like it! Simple as that! As for me, I watched it 3 times! And why do you have to go about tearing someone’s reputation? It still involves a lot of hard work and passion (which you did not like, I recognise that); not fair to just pull it down so harshly! A humble request – Kindly reconsider your views…

Anurag’s DEV D is a movie without any morals or principles or values. He clearly showed that something like LOVE doesnt exist and what exists is only LUST. He even says in the end that he dint ever love paro and he dint even see her face properly and whats that? they have been chatting all their lives sharing their childhood memories and wat do you call that? I mean the real dev d really loves paro and sticks strongly to his love till the end but in this movie he just killed the whole concept………Atleast him dying in the movie would have been better….. Chi thu yuk

I quote u..”cinema has hit rock bottom in terms of actors or heroes as today we have Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol type baccha home-bred guys getting lead roles”

If thats so,then i think the concept of a movie being reviewed has hit rock bottom with BACCHA TYPE REVIEWERS LIKE U (who have no movie sense or sense of watz happening with the socienty around u) writing reviews on a movie which is running to packed houses still…i dont give a dam if you write this review in ur personal diary or wateva…but i hate it when someone searches on google for a classic like dev-d and finds this crap review popping up …WAKEEEE UP MR.BACHA REVIEWER…. the society wants change from the regular heroes and loves a Farhan Akhtar or a Abhay Deol…
Take a break nd walk out of your little frog well that you are in….

  16. to hell with conservatives like you said

perhaps dev d would have been half as bad, had it not been for your prudishness. go suck it and stick to your safe, lovey-dovey classics. are you part of sri ram sena, by any chance?

dev d is phenomenal. it is for elites, and not you of everyone.

The story of Devdas is a ready-made platform for endless psycho-analysis and study of contemporary social framework. The original tale relied on the notions of platonic love whereas Dev D is about physical love. It relies on on-face shock value! Devdas is a coward who is defeated by the social prejudices and carries the guilt throughout his life. He drinks in order to forget his cowardice. Dev D and all the other characters of Kashyap’s tale aren’t influenced by the social norms. Both stories thereby reflecting their specific era.

The character sketching is unique. Dev is played to near perfection by Abhay Deol, whose performance is quiet and confident. Paro (Mahie Gill) is no more the sacrificial damsel who lives physically and mentally with different men. Kashyap also maintains the audience’s distance from the characters using the brilliance in script and smooth editing. He never allows us to sympathize with the characters, thereby shifting the focus from one to the other- a rare work of imagery, indeed!

I strongly feel Kashyap could have gone with a better actress for Chanda (Kalki Koechlin). Chanda’s part was not exploited well. The psychological impact of the whole mms incident on her which leads to the suicide of her father never showed up. It was a perfect opportunity to tell the world about the feelings of a girl, and all the hardships she goes through because of one mms!
