No Advance Booking for Kathanayakudu at Odeon 70mm

This came as a surprise to me. When I called up Odeon 70mm, RTC X Roads, which is the main theater for Kathanayakudu (the Telugu version of Kuselan), they told me that there is no Advance Booking. This is quite a shame. For such a Big film no advance booking in its main theater? However, Advance Booking at all theaters with Easy Movies is in full swing.

Somehow I feel the pre-release buzz for Kuselan/Kathanayakudu is less compared to what it was for Dasavatharam. Anyways, the latest Rajni-Jagapati Babu starrer is sure to shine unless P. Vasu has got totally carried away by Rajni and focussing too much on him and not the story. But since P. Vasu is an expert remaker of movies from Malayalam to Tamil, I am sure that Kuselan/Kathanayakudu will have its heart in the right place. The telugu version is produced by ace producer, who has not produced a money-raking venture post-Indra, Aswini Dutt.

After some initial trouble, the film is now all set to release in Karnataka as well. The film will release on August 1st, 2008.

Singh is Kinng Theatrical Trailer and Story Preview— Routine Brainless Comic-Action Fare

The new theatrical trailer (2 mins +) of Singh is Kinng (SiK) has made it on to the web. A couple of days prior to its release Taran Adarsh, from indiafm.com, was raving about it;. That got my expectations up. The music has released and the makers claim the audio sales is a creating a sensation. In my opinion the music is the same old beat-rap-bhangra-hip-hop mix with no memorable tune worth a mention. Regardless, the movie is creating a lot of buzz and I expected a lot from the trailer. In fact, the trailer does a great job of telling us what the movie is about, but the trailer and the fare it promises seems to be routine.

Many days back, I read (a rather detailed) synopsis of the film on Smashits.com and was wondering if the story is really true. Then when the trailer came, it matched quite well. I am quoting below from Smashits.com and this synopsis is more detailed than the trailer. here goes…

Singh Is Kinng, the most keenly awaited romantic comedy of 2008, revolves around a gang of crooks transformed by a good man and his selfless love for a pretty girl Lakhan Singh aka Lucky (Sonu Sood) is the ‘king’ of the Australian underworld accompanied by his associates (played by Javed Jaffrey, Neha Dhupia, Manoj Pahwa, Yashpal Sharma, Kamal Chopra and Sudhanshu Pande.) Far away, in a small village in Punjab, where Lucky was born, there exists someone more notorious than him Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar). The village is fed up of his magnanimity, which has resulted in a number of hilariously disastrous situations. Out of desperation, they decide to send him on a long trip (that will keep him out of the village for a while!) to bring Lucky back to Punjab, as his despicable deeds were maligning their image in Australia. The happy-go-lucky bumpkin, taking his mission a bit too seriously, embarks on his journey accompanied by his friend, Tony Singh (Om Puri), who hates Happy for dragging him into it. The high point of his journey is his chance meeting with Sonia (Katrina Kaif) with whom he falls in love, but upon reaching his destination, things take a precarious turn as he runs into a series of comic misadventures, leaving him penniless. He is fortunate to find warmth and affection in an elderly lady (Kirron Kher) who helps him meet Lucky. In a strange turn of events, an attempt on Lucky?s life is foiled by a well-intentioned Happy who fights off the attackers by risking his own life. Following the hilarious altercation, Lucky lands up in hospital paralyzed, and Happy, unexpectedly, finds the tables turned on him when he is expected to assume the role of the new ?kinng?! The series of chaos, shocks and comic misunderstandings that ensue eventually result in redemption and an accidental wedding!

From what the trailer offers, it looks like another Anees Bazmee’s Welcome. I thought it would be a solid masala film with an emotional punch. SiK has the same type of silly-comic lines and goofy scenes. Anees Bazmee himself is from the David Dhawan school of movie-making. However David Dhawan’s older films had interesting storylines, it is only his later more recent films that he is making the please-leave-your-brains-behind-and-ask-no-questions type films. And Anees Bazmee follows Dhawan’s recent style of film making.

With all the hype behind the title, Akshay Kumar’s victory streak at the box-office, Katrina Kaif’s numero uno glam-doll status, and promise of a masala comedy entertainter…the film is sure to open Big. But will it be a see-once-laugh-and-forget type film or a masala film that will really make a mark for itself? If Akshay Kumar is to enter the league of SRK he has to make films that leave a mark. He has enough of see-once-laugh-and-forget movies. Lets see, Singh is Kinng releases on 8-8-08.

Taare Zameen Par DVD Review— Aamir Khan’s Gift To TZP Fans

The wait for the DVD has finally come to an end for fans of Taare Zameen Par (TZP). One of the finest films in our recent times, TZP opened to critical acclaim and low box-office buzz because it released along with the mass-entertainer Welcome. At that time Aamir said that once the Welcome effect wanes, TZP will shine. That is exactly what happened even earlier than predicted. TZP went on to become a blockbuster at the box-office too.

TZP, which released during Christmas 2007, created a sort of awakening in the society with regard to parent’s pressure on their kids academics. Although the film is about a kid with learning disorders, the film is a statement on how parents and the society has ceased to nurture unique talents in kids. The film’s message, story, performances, and direction sends out an emotional message that is bound to touch your heart. The performance of Darsheel Safary created a sensation in India and there was buzz that he must be allowed to compete along with the others in the Best Actor category of the Filmfare Awards.

Aamir said that he is busy working on the DVD, a while back, and he has kept his promise by delivering a gem of a DVD. It is bound to go beyond your expectations. The DVD has been packaged more like a textbook or a board game box…yes, its huge. The package contains:

(i) two big-size high quality prints from the film (Ishaan’s Painting, and Nikumbh’s Painting)

(ii) ishaan’s filpbook—remember? it is a heart-touching scene.

(iii) Ishaan’s book; the highlight is a school label designed on the book (taking you straight back to school in a fraction of a second with a big smile on your face). The book contains Ishaan’s notes on all the characters of the film.

(iv) A TZP inscribed pencil.

(v) Two DVDs: the film, and special features; and a Audio CD of the Background music. Total three discks.

Other Special Features include:

(i) director’s commentary, panel discussion on children with Aamir khan in a discussion with experts, deleted scenes and why they didn’t make it to the film, making of the film, and promos, trailers, and stills.

The quality of the packaging, the colors and photographs used are superb. Full credit to T-Series for designing such a beautiful collector’s edition of the Taare Zameen Par DVD.

The Flipside: Although, it gives TZP fans a larger-than-DVD experience, the package is too big to handle. It will not fit in your regular CD or DVD holder or cabinet. It would have great if the DVD was packed in a regular size DVD pack within this magnificently large package. In addition, the dvd holder is too tight; when taking out the dvd you might feel scared that it might break. I wish this was smoother else over the time DVD will start chipping away.

This is one of the rare Bollywood films, which has its own fan followilng. For such fans, this DVD is a must. Thank you Aamir and T-Series for providing such world-class Home Entertainment. I haven’t seen any Hollywood film DVD packaged like this either.

The entire package containing Two DVD Video and One Audio CD is priced at Rs. 499/-; Anamorphic Widescreen DVD, Dolby Digital 5.1, English subtitles, and Universal Region. TZP VCDs are also available.

The Hot Nayan-Vishal Song from Sathyam

There is nothing really interesting going on in the Southern movie industries. Even the hordes of websites don’t seem to be carrying anything exciting. The Dasavatharam euphoria/debates has ended with the film being termed a hit. The only thing exciting right now is [no, not Rajni's Kuselan/Kathanayakudu] is the hot photo gallery of the latest Nayanatara-Vishal number from their upcoming film Sathyam in Tamil and Salute in Telugu.

Yes, without a doubt the stills are hot, but thats it. It doesn’t really excite you more than exclaiming “nayan looks hot”. Probably because the individuals involved are giving stone-like artificial expressions. Instead of Vishal, Nayan could well be clinging on to a pillar or a big piece of rock and the effect would probably have been even hotter. There is no animation or hunger in Vishal. As for Nayan, she too tries hard to look hot with her strained expressions. The song is being touted as the most erotic song on Tamil Cinema ever. Well, we’ll have to wait till the movie comes out. My bet is this: the camera will move so fast keeping in tune with today’s wanna-be-hi-tech-and-modern song taking that the sensuality will not even seep in. Lets wait and see as…as of now, all i can say is Vishal and Nayan had a hot photo session!

Without a doubt, Nayanathara is the hottest lady around. She shows the others that being hot doesn’t mean to look like a patient (Kareena and all the others who like the zero figure). Nayan is perfect heroine material…she is someone who can pull the crowds in. Love how healthy and juicy she looks…she can increase your appetite…how many heroines we have today who can do this?

Surely, these pics on the posters are sure to pull in the masses to check out this song. The song Chellame Chellame, which features the hot stills, is a slow…really slow number. Hearing the song and looking at the pics, it looks like the director wants to make a hot-classy song.

Hearing the song, I am not that curious about this number any more.

Lets wait and watch how it looks on screen.

30 mins for VoC, Stock Market Rises, and a Man’s Optimism

As I write this post, it is 45 mins to 6pm when the Vote of Confidence will take place. Even in the face of testing uncertainty over the ruling Govt’s stability, the stock markets have been rallying well since yesterday. Today, they closed at 14,104. No news channel or paper are talking about how it will be post-VoC, but a close friend of man who has been around 30 years more than painted a very rosy picture. At first, i didn’t think so, but when the stocks rose, i am begining to wonder if it could really turn out that way…

Chances are that the UPA govt. might just scrape through and have a rough-tough, but eventually safe landing. Once this happens, with the Left out of the Govt, Manmohan Singh’s true form will come out…he will go ahead with all the legislation and reforms that couldn’t be done because of the Left’s opposition. Seeing this the Industry will celebrate, stock market will go back to where it came down from (at least back to the 16,000). Only luck will tell whom it wants to favor depending on how the oil prices and inflation play out over the next few months, which eventually will decide the next govt. This is probably the best post-VoC outlook i’ve heard. I hope this happens.

It is an open secret that all our politicians are bullshitting; at least the stocks will rise, economy will be back up, jobs will be generated, and inflation will ease up. Why doesn’t anybody openly state that the Left would have split regardless of the deal or no deal–how else will they fight Cong. and win their two states of WB and Kerala? and if the Congress was so much in love with the deal then not do this a couple of years back when the opposition for the deal and the initiation of the deal began? Anyways, this bullshit apart, i hope post-VoC things get back to business untill the next election.

Today, in most newspapers there was buzz about Mayawati as PM; i am surprised with the English media’s sudden affection for Mayawati. Probably, courtesy her chief strategist Mishra, she said something mind-blowing. She was referring to the the Iran-India-Pakistan Gas pipeline story that is set the stage for the Indo-US Nuclear Deal. I was truly impressed as nobody was talking about this and she did. I will write about the Gas pipeline story in my next blog. Lets first see if the Govt. lasts tonight. By the way, TOI today had a superb headline: Where is the Party Tonight?

A colleague of mine suggested that Sharad Pawar, the IPL-Man, should organize a dance-item(s) 30 mins befor the VoC, in IPL 20-20 style (definitely play the Singh is King number!). This will allow our politicians to unwind before the high-voltage vote.

Anyways, abhi voting bakhi hai mere dost…

Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan Fight on Kat’s BDay!

Dominating the blistering rage of The Dark Knight at the Box Office on Monday is news about the SRK-Salman tiff during the Salman Khan hosted party for girlfriend Katrina Kaif’s birthday. Hearing this news I am sure Rakhee must be going mere karan arjun aaise nahi kar sakte. Jokes apart, SRK and Sallu have always been known to be good buddies among the khan trio. This incident has little to do with seething anger within and more to do with the influence of alcohol!

Here are some of the reasons that have been doing the rounds:

(i) Salman was already ‘high’ by the time this started and probably SRK too had a few drinks. We all know how reckless Salman has been in the past. Salman asked SRK to do a guest role in Mr. and Mrs. Khanna, a home production of Salman and his brother(s). Salman obviously thought SRK would agree given how many times Salman has done guest roles for SRK–Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, OSO, SRK’s TV show etc. SRK declined and this pissed off Salman.

(ii) Salman began irritating SRK about how Dus Ka Dum is doing better than his Paanchi Paas. Salman continued to irritate SRK and then SRK decided to retort and did a joke on his ex-girlfriend, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. This infuriated Salman.

(iii) in one version Salman and SRK even spoke to about who will wrist their fist first and with what impact!

Anyways, my guess is that with all those drink and the rudderless career path SRK’s and Salman’s is taking (super stars and TV shows? cummon man; BigB did bcuz he did rock-bottom and had to clear his debts)—this was bound to happen. It was probably a combination of all the stories we are hearing, but fact remains they did have tiff. Apparently, Amir Khan and Gauri Khan intervened and stopped it. In all this mess, poor kid Katrina lost all the fun out of her birthday and was seen crying in the car sitting next to Salman–most probably disgusted with his behavior.

One interesting piece everybody is missing is the Ash factor. It will draw more trouble for SRK. As it is, he is pitted against the Big B camp and now getting Ash into a drunk-fight will only worsen his delicate relationship with BigB. I wonder what that joke is…if it does come out then it will make headlines!

Anyways, I didn’t expect this from SRK. In the recent past, he has been targeted by Big B and Amir in their Blogs, but his response was cool. Hopefully, SRK will take the first step in signing the peace treaty.

Spiderman Pips Batman for the Opening Weekend Record

In spite of the universall and unanimous positive and rave critics and user reviews for Batman 2, it was unable to beat the opening weekend record set by Spiderman 3. Let me clarify this further: in terms of gross revenue Batman 2 has set the record for opening weekend, but in terms of ticket sales the winner is Spiderman 3. Let me explain…

Batman 2 has grossed $155.34 million for the opening weekend in the U.S. as opposed to Spiderman 3’s $151.1 million. However, according to Media by Numbers, a firm that tracks box-office revenues, the average price of ticket in 2007 for Spiderman 3 was $6.88 compared to the average ticket price in 2008 at $7.08. If we look at ticket sales, which is the best test, Spiderman 3 sold 21.96 million tickets compared to Batman 2’s 21.94 million. Yes, marginal difference, but still there is a difference.

However, the positive reviews and super-hit public talk for Batman 2 is raging like a wild fire even on Monday (even in Hyderabad, India) and is all set to break Spiderman’s or any other man’s total run gross and that is for sure. But, the most talked about record in Hollywood is the opening weekend. Had Heath Ledger been alive (in real life) and came back as Joker in Batman 3, it will for sure break Spidy’s record.

Records apart, if you haven’t seen Batman 2: The Dark Knight, you are missing a gem of a film. Just watch it.

New Song Added to Jaane Tu— Music Video Featuring Genelia

For the week of July 18th-24th, an additional song has been added to  Jaane Tu. According to Amir Khan’s blog, the song Jaane tu mera kya hai was deleted because they felt it would dampen the pace of the film. But when his friends started asking him why not have it, the makers of this film have decided to add it for a one week trial period. Depending on the feedback they get this week, the song will either stay or be deleted. The song was one of my favorites from the film when i first heard the songs.

The song comes right after Jai is asked by Aditi to leave because he does not come to wish her at midnight for her birthday; Jai has to go to Meghna’s house that night to meet her parents. The song is an all-out Genelia Music Video, which shows her in a gorgeous black gown, special effects to show breaking mirrors (read heart) and multiple Genelia reflections in the space. While all this is going on, Aditi, in her cute nightdress, is watching her inner self sing to her. Genelia’s expressions are excellent and it is has been shot in typical Mariah Careh style minus the sensuousness, of course.

Nothing is lost or gained by not having or having the song. The images shown in the song are all clips from the movie that we have seen. On the other hand, it would have been a great addition had the collages/images shown were new or scenes that are telling us something more about Aditi and Jai. In addition, the song is exclusively Genelia’s, which means that Imraan Khan has no exclusive song and this tilts the weight of the love story towards Genelia. This could be another reason why they didn’t have it in the first place— it gives too much importance to Genelia. As it is, she is the soul of the film.

For Genelia fans, this song is a treat. My view on it: Keep the song. It is a beautiful composition, the movie is already a super-hit, it doesn’t hurt to have it. My advice for Amir Khan and Abbas Tyrewala is that if they are confused about the song–to have or not to have—they must simply cut the song from the film and release the HD version of the song on YouTube.com and be done with it.

Impressions on viewing the film for the second time:

(i)it wasn’t as enjoyable as it was the first time.

(ii) second half is a drag and only picks up in the last 20 minutes, which is a total riot and highlight of the film.

(iii) there is also too much footage of pubs, drinks, and loud disco music in the second half.

(v)The background music for “the Violent Streak” (where Jai stares at the Paresh Rawal)is superb and we can see vintage A R Rahman there.

(vi) I felt this the first time too: the film is more like an Indian version of Beverly Hills 90210 (remember the show?) Jaane tu is actually Teen TV Show material….it is ARR’s magical music that elevates it to a super-hit film and Genelia’s performances; i hope she is nominated and wins the Filmfare.

At 9:05, for the 9pm show the theater was not Full, but i think eventually the Balcony was full. Looks like the film is losing steam at the single screens as it is mostly a multiplex/city/yuppy film. But regardless, the film is a smash-hit.

Batman 2: The Dark Knight Review— Simply Superb!

I must admit, I am not a Batman movie fan. In fact, I even used to avoid them because it was always too dark and you couldn’t see anything properly and hence not understand it. However, I used to regularly watch the Batman-Robin TV show as a kid and get excited with the various villains of Gotham City— the joker, penguin man etc. I am not sure how many of the previous five Batman films I’ve seen, but I wanted to watch this one. Nope, neither did i see any trailers. A few days back I read TIME’s review of the film and then a few days later on CNN and both said that the film is “stunning”. I don’t care much for what these critics say because I don’t understand most of their reviews—they try to be too complicated and hi-fi. But when i saw that the Grade on Yahoo! User Rating on Y! Movies was ‘A’, I knew I shouldn’t miss this film. Ladies and Gentlemen, Batman 2: The Dark Knight is a Blockbuster all the way…from the first second until the last second!

The film begins with Gotham City and Batman reflecting on what the future course should be to fight crime? How long will Batman do it? As Batman would like it, will the people of Gotham City raise to the occasion, take inspiration from Batman and fight for their city? Unfortunately, what results in the brief absence of Batman is fake-Batmen who are trying to be like Batman. In the meantime, the city gets a new District Attorney (DA), Harvey Dent, whose name is a terror for the underworld. The new DA is able to lock up more than half of the city’s goons by flexing the arms of the law. Batman (alias Bruce Wayne, the Billionaire), begins to realize that it is people like Harvey Dent who should be Gotham City’s Hero, not a caped crusader who brakes the law to bring about justice. Even as Harvey Dent and Batman are putting the underworld behind bars, there comes the new face of terror to wreck untold havoc–the Joker. The Joker brings all the goons together and declares that Batman needs to be killed. Joker is hell bent on making Batman show his face and just wants to play a game with him.

As the film progresses, we can see a triangular struggle for supremacy and ideology between the Joker, DA, and Batman. During this process, the Joker not only sets the City on fire, but also takes the DA, the cops, and Batman to the brink of destruction and ultimately at the end even though he loses, he wins. There are several sub-plots and twists in the film, which are beyond the scope of this review. How does the joker succeed in wrecking havoc throughout the system in spite of Batman’s presence? How does he check the gaining importance of the DA? How does he finally manage to make Batman look like the bad guy? How does Batman and his cop friend, Gordan, resolve the crisis? These questions from the rest of the story.

I have never seen a movie where the villain is so bad and disgusting, but you can’t help but hold him on a pedestal for his intelligence. The action sequences are fabulous—(i) the one where Batman goes under the truck on his bike and ties it up making it skip in the air (ii) the scene where the BatMobile is wrecked and Batman ejects himself in a BatBike. The screenplay is simply fantastic and gripping. You will notice that at many times the screenplay shows three different sequences simultaneously and it builds the tension. The background music is haunting and particularly when the Joker is around is terrifying and adds to the villainy. The twists, sub-plots, the relationships between the main characters— The DA, Batman, Police Commissioner, Rachel–are super. Following two dialogues are highlight: (i) DA to Bruce Wayne about Batman: Either you die being a hero or you live long enough to become a villain (ii) Joker to other goon: you only think about money…this City deserves a better class of criminals and I will give it to them.

The performances are first-rate and the make up for Harvey Dent towards the end when he becomes Two Face is simply out-of-this-word. Make-up or special effects, it is super. One of the reasons why this film has been received with such fanatic fever in the US is because of the stellar performance of the late Heath Ledger who played The Joker. You have to see it to believe his performance. Heath Ledger played Ennis Del Mar in the Academy Award winning controversial film about two gay men, Brokeback Mountain. Heath Ledger died on January 22nd, 2008 due a prescription drug overdose. There is talk that he might get an Oscar Nomination for this film. In fact, he totally dominates Batman. The DA too gives a superb performances.

Full marks to Christopher Nolan (the director, and credited along with others for Story, Screenplay, and Producer) for making such a marvelous film. It is easily the best super-hero super-villain film of 2008 and in the recent past. The entire two and a half hours is action-power packed and you will forget all about global warming, inflation, the vote of confidence on July 22nd, and dipping stock prices as you get engrossed in this epic battle Batman, the DA, and The Joker. The film does contain intense action episodes and some sequences that some might find disturbing, particular kids. However, for those who, in general, do not like Hollywood Super-hero films might not want to watch this. The film has no romance, innocence, or comedy like other super-hero films; it is dark and intense.

Make sure you watch this film in a theater that is equipped with the best Dolby or DTS to enjoy it to the fullest. The Dolby-Digital sound in PVR-Hyderabad was excellent.

The Dark Knight is 24 Carrot Blockbuster Material film and is simply superb! The film has already began to break all existing Hollywood Box-Office Records. It has now officially, the Highest First-Day opening ($66.4 million in US) beating Spider-Man 3 ($59.8 million) and is expected to beat the opening weekend record as well. I am sure, Christopher Nolan, must have said, “the ticket-paying public at the box-office deserves a better class of blockbusters…and they will get it”

Chandni Chowk To China First Look and Trailer Analysis

At least in terms of movie promos, 2008 so far truly belongs to The Hit Machine Akshay Kumar’s; Tashan bit the dust. Even as we continue to be bombarded with specials on the 8-8-08 release of Singh is Kinng through all forms of media, the promos of Akshay Kumar’s next, Chandni Chowk To China (CC2C)for Diwali 2008 have began. The promo is fine; not great and for such an interesting title the trailer is not even half as interesting or intriguing.

Let us take a peak at the First Look. Before that, we have to laud the efforts of the marketing guys for Bollywood films these days. No matter how trashy the film is, the First Look/Promo material is almost world class; just like Hollywood films. Sometimes I wonder why the film makers don’t spend as much effort in penning a good story as their marketing counterparts who make such appealing promo material. Anyways, coming back to CC2C, the First Look is classy and interesting, but some key elements seem to have been forgotten. The most funny and interesting part is the vegetables on the swords (does AK play a chef?). However, on the flip side there is only China and no Chandni Chowk in the poster—the red sun, AK’s Chinese get-up, and even the Chinese architecture in the backdrop. But where is Chandni Chowk here?

More than the globe-trotting title, the highlight of the promo is the presence of Warner Bros. Pictures. My first reaction..wow! a feather in your cap AK! But with Warner Bros. at the helm of affairs, the trailer is very ordinary. It tells us nothing about the film. And if we consider it a teaser, which it is not, then it is even worse. All it shows is several shots in China, AK as usual pottering around but this time with Chinese, Deepika Padukone shown like a Chinese girl dancing, some crouching tiger type stunts, and one shot of Mithun Chakraborty. Towards the end, we see Akshay Kumar who plays Siddhu Sharma shouting out the title of the film.

Cummon now, with Warner Bros. pumping in the money….is this the kind of trailer we get? where is the curiosity factor in the trailer?…Perhaps it will take a few more years before our guys learn to make good trailers.

The official website for the film http://www.cc2c-thefilm.com/ is dysfunctional, as on July 19th, 2008.

Produced by Ramesh Sippy, written by Sridhar Raghavan, and directed by Nikhil Advani Chandni Chowk to China is scheduled to release for Diwali 2008–October 24th, 2008. I expect this film to be an action-comedy. The initial response to the trailer from netizens is mixed. Lets hope this film delivers.
