The Danger Posed to Jalsa by (Blood) Thirsty Pawan Kalyan Fans.

It would tantamount to a lie if a Pawan Kalyan fan said that he was not thirsty for a hit. In fact, so (blood) thirsty are they that talk has already began about re-writing records set by Pokiri. Till the other day, it was all about re-writing Khushi’s records and rising above Khushi, thus, suggesting that they are thirsty for a hit, but this new attention to battle it out with Pokiri makes them blood thirsty.

There are several factors that must be considered before embarking on such expectations, which could ultimately harm the film. Every film of Pawan Kalyan, post Khushi, has been defeated by fans and their expectations. Jhonny was a well made art-like movie, Gudumba Shankar had all elements to be a decent winner, and same is the case with Balu. All the movies are fine and if they were watched for what they were worth they would have been termed a hit, but instead every film was subjected to the Khushi test. One must also remember that Pokiri released with no strings attached. It came, Mahesh Babu did a great and cool job, Puri Jagannath was blood thirsty to bounce back, and Illeana stole every man’s heart, the summer was clear with other movies not living up to the expectations (recall Bangaram) and so we had an all-time hit. Jalsa may well be  a good movie in its own right, but what will be left of it if it is compared to Khushi and Pokiri? This recurring cycle of unreasonable expectations on Pawan Kalyan films, I feel, is sometimes the work of anti-fans. This is again my speculation, but the truth is anti-fans do not need to do this for Pawan Kalyan’s films, his own fans will begin their first day of the movie with not-upto-Khushi-range talk and then on the fourth day will start supporting the film. Too late by then.

Let me divert your attention to the US Presidential campaign. There are states where to select the party nomination, any body can vote (open states) and where only registered party members vote. Thus, in open states non-party members will vote for the weaker candidate to strengthen their candidate. This phenomenon also happens in Tollywood when anti-fans see movies on first day and start spreading rumors (if the movie is weak). Imagine how the situation would be if only registered fans of the hero were allowed to watch the movie the entire first two weeks, or at least the first week.

Moving on, the onus to make Jalsa a hit was always on Trivikram’s story. It was known to all that Pawan Kalyan will do his bit—his presence is enough to create a stir and hype. Devi Sri Prasad has done above and beyond this job and his music has only fuelled the craze and hype surrounding the film. We also know that Pawan Kalyan will be great in the movie and so will the production values, but what will ultimately matter is Trivikram, the story, plot, and the characterizations. For the movie to rise above Khushi, fans must be so much in awe of the final product that Khushi should soon be history.

Given the number of prints, theaters, advance booking, curiosity and hype, Jalsa is all set to embark on a historic journey at the box-office, but unfortunately the immaturity of Chiranjeevi-Pawan Kalyan fans might just (again) work against the movie. I hope that Jalsa will be seen just for what it is and not be compared to any other movie. If the story is in the right place, given the sensational music and power presence of Pawan Kalyan it will show Tollywood not only what Pawan Kalyan’s Power is, but will also redefine and reinforce the stamina of Tollywood.

The Degradation of SRK

Although I do not drink much cola, I have always favored PEPSI for its young energy and who else could have been a better fit for that, back in the days, other than SRK. Even today SRK is energetic, but surely not young in age. Having said this, i was pained to see Ranbir Kapoor, the goofster star-kid of a flop movie SAAWARIYA, as the new young face of PEPSI. Wait, SRK too is there, but this time Om is Shanthi’s elder brother!

With the airing of this ad, we can officially say that SRK is no more the young face of Pepsi and perhaps (un) knowingly SRK has made a statement that he has graduated. One must give credit to SRK for doing this as it requires courage to show yourself as an overly protective geeky and nerdy elder brother. While on one hand his decision to go along with Pepsi should be appreciated or on the other hand we can say this is the degree of his desperation to be part of the Pepsi world.

PepsiYoungistanAd

It is pretty clear that Pepsi moved fast and roped in the hottest young thing around—Deepika. They must have also decided that SRK is no longer young; at least not as young to be paired opposite Deepika as SRK himself has said that she is half his age and twice as tall! So they brought in Ranbir and i would like to say for lack of any other young hero in our industry. What about Shahid Kapoor?—oh, i forgot, it is probably because is not from the Kapoor family and not associated in any form with Deepika. The ad could well have featured only Deepika and Ranbir, but why is SRK there? For all the arrogance and pride SRK as a brand is known for he should have flatly refused to do the ad. Given the creative resources with Pepsi, it is not rocket science to make an ad with SRK and Deepika and still show him be youthful.

As for Ranbir; i would really like to talk to whomever it may concern at Pepsi to find out what made them choose Ranbir Kapoor? He lacks that untamed wild yet classy energy that SRK (still) possessed.

Clearly, both Pepsi and SRK had a choice to make and given the outcome I feel that SRK has lost out. For hardcore SRK fans this ad will be degrading. SRK and Pepsi’s decision to be part of several generations to come is surely welcome and innovative, but it can be done in other ways where SRK has the upper hand. It is un-kingly of SRK to accept this guest-role where it is Ranbir Kapoor who delivers the punch line about being young—that everything is possible when you are young.  In his attempt (could also read as desperation) to be part of all that is media SRK should not comprise on his core values and image—that of a King.

The Delay in Jalsa Release Date

The release date of Jalsa has been postponed and it will, most likely, not release on 28th March, 2008. I had earlier reported on this blog about the potential preponement of the release date (a blog has that received many views), but this news came as a shock to me too. It may not affect the movie’s ultimate fate, which is dependent on the story, but it will surely affect the sentiments of fans and industrywallas.

Pawan Kalyan movies have almost always been associated with delays and Jalsa has been in the making for roughly two years now. However, the songs of the movie have been received so well across all sections of fans and industry that it is officially the musical blockbuster of the season. This coupled with several other factors has injected absolute positivity about the movie and everybody has already marked their calender for 28th March. The postponement, which is almost confirmed, will definitely break the intense momentum that has been building up in the past couple of weeks. The tentative release date suggested is April 2nd and the reasons given are on technical grounds.

The trend of delaying a movie because “technical work” is being done speaks volumes of the unprofessional nature of our Telugu film makers. Hollywood announces release dates several months before and it is rare that a release date is ever shifted. Even Bollywood is announcing release dates well ahead of time and actually keeping the promised date.

Whatever the reasons may be, this delay in the release of Jalsa, is sure affect the positive sentiments the movie has generated so far. Skeptics and those who don’t-like-whatever-pawan kalyan-does have also been enjoying the songs, but will not begin to raise doubts now. For a movie that has built up such a momentum, Allu Arvind must take responsibility for the break. No doubt, this might not have any direct implications for the first week collections, but it is bound to work against the general sentiment that Tollywood goes by: delays in releases are bad omens.

ps–just as i am about to publish this draft, I got a call from a friend of mine; regular guy, not too interested in movies, but wants to see Jalsa. He too is not too pleased about the delay and is sharing with me his speculations about the delay. Speculations are not good.

The First Day Movie Review: RACE

Friday, 21st March, 2008. 14:15 hrs at Ramakrishna 35mm, Abids, Hyderabad

Honestly, the promos of RACE never caught my attention enough to go watch the movie, but I read Taran Adarsh’s review where he declared the movie a “smash hit!” and hailed it as Abbas-Mustan’s next best work after Khiladi and Baazigar. I quickly booked a couple of tickets and went to my favorite spot in the city to watch Hindi movies.

Sure enough, the HOUSE FULL board was displayed, a big gathering of young men and since it was the matinee there were several ladies too, and of course several folks selling ‘black’ tickets. The poster of RACE is racy with three gorgeous ladies: Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, and Sameera Reddy. As I was walking into the theater, i heard a guy say “the movie is good time pass….nothing really special”. The crowd in the theater was not as electrifying as expected (perhaps, this is the difference RACE_posterbetween first day morning show and a latter show).

Ok, now the movie. The entire movie has been shot in South Africa, cool cars (BMWs and Benz), and lots of twists, but too many twists spoil the movie. In an attempt to make the movie a ‘edge of the seat thriller’, the directors put in so many twists all the way till the end that I totally lost track of the main plot/story. Saif and Askshay Khanna are brothers where the latter is the younger brother! (yea, i know, isn’t it funny?). The first 25 mins of the movie deals with horse races and the backdrop is a horse ranch that Saif owns; does not add anything to the story. Apparently, there is some sort of rivalry between the brothers, each is plotting against the other to be killed in an accident and inherit money form an insurance policy. Enter Bipasha Basu who also begins to take sides/cheats/makes love etc.

The first half is really average and there is not much action and lacks the punch except for a couple of twists. Anil Kapoor and Sameera Reddy enter just before the intermission. The happenings get a little more interesting in the second half mainly due to Anil Kapoor’s characterization–a serial fruit eater. Sameera Reddy is just plain dumb and silly. The kind of comedy that she is made to do with Anil Kapoor has been done to death in the past and moreover she just doesn’t carry it off. Johnny Lever appears for two minutes and his entrance was cheered heavily.

I really wish i could tell you to the story, but it is too complicated to write. Like I said, i lost track of the story. The twists were good, but between these twists there is no ‘punch’. The songs (more like Mtv videos) are unwelcome, misplaced, and bad. Even as you are about to get up and get going, there is another twist and after when you are ready to go there is another twist and then another twist…by the end of which you will be glad to leave the theater.
Parents who want to go with their families must know that this movie is rated ‘A’. There are several ‘double meaning’ lines between Anil and Sameera. Basically, he wants to make out with her and she being dumb is not able to make it out. So Anil is wingling a banana before her, putting his hands on her breasts, and asking to her to suck on a sugarcane stick. There is also explicit reference and usage of alcohol, and incest (where the brother asks his wife to go seduce the elder brother as part of the plan). There is also a limited amount of cleavage show.

In fact, you also do not understand what the race is about?—it is about two brothers (as the posters/promos say), is it about the horses (only two of them), or is it the car race (the one at the end)

Bottom line: This is not a paisa vasool film. If you are a movie buff then go watch it, else you can wait for it on TV or home video.

Movienomics Verdict: Only One Thumb Up.

The 2007 Power List: Music Directors

ScreenShot of TollywoodCentralTollywoodCentral.com, where I am guest editor and writer, is coming out with the 2007 Power List for Tollywood film industry. The list for music directors has just been released. The music directors power list details the top 9 music directors for the year 2007 including several interesting facts about them.

The concept of generating the ‘top 10′ list is common, but for telugu movie website the style and class with which the pages has been crafted must be appreciated.

Often times we hear of directors and film makers who raise the technical brilliance (you can even watch video streams from YouTube.com) standards of our industry, we can now confidently say that the designers of TollywoodCentral.com have raised the bar for style, design, and technical capacity of Telugu film based websites. In addition to streaming YouTube.com, you can read the latest news, analysis, and several TollywoodCentral Original publications like MirchiBajji, STAR WARS, Spotlight, and Movienomics (yes, as part of a partnership Movienomics is syndicated to TollywoodCentral.com). TollywoodCentral is designed and mainted by a web media design company called w3shastra

The Leaked Video

Looks like everything is leaking for Jalsa. First, it was the music, next song clips, and now the storyScreenshot of the leaked video from Youtube.com on TV9 (perhaps TV9 guys are also busy reading discussion boards where typically such gossip is shared). Speculating on story is fine, but the leak of actual movie material like songs and video calls attention for tighter security.

While i was searching for the second trailer on YouTube.com, i came across a video titled “jalsa leaked video”. I saw it and was shocked. Two reasons: the fact that somebody leaked it from the editing room (seemingly) and secondly shocked to see Pawan Kalyan actually dancing and doing ’steps’!

The video is not master print, it was been captured by (probably) a mobile while the song was playing on a tv/computer monitor screen. We can also hear the guys talk in telugu and sound quality was not bad for a pirated/leaked video. I was hoping to hear from of pirates talk, but they were silent for the most part. They were two of them, and maybe one of them was dancing which prompted the other to refer to him as ‘lawrence’.

Ladies and Gentleman, Pawan Kalyan has danced with full energy and gutso in a song that would rank among the least favorite in the audio, Gaalilo Telinatu…For the guitar bit he actually does a ’step’ similar to the famous ‘veena’ step, lets call this the ‘guitar step’. The editing is crip and Illeana is red hot!

The makers of Jalsa, need to investigate into these incidents. This will not harm the movie as the song is good and the dance is great, but if it was bad? What is appreciable is the user comments posted for the video where in everybody unanimously decried this act of piracy. I was delighted to see the widespread support to discourage piracy.

Of course, there are sections of the population that feel perhaps the makers themselves are leaking it out just to test the waters; just like how news about chiru’s political entry got ‘leaked’ to Andhrajyothy newspaper.

The bottom line is: the pirates are helping to promote the movie and fans can celebrate as Pawan Kalyan is actually dancing!

ps– it sounds like Devi Sri Prasad has rendered his voice for the theatrical version where as Tippu sang in the audio CD.

The Marketing of Movies: Jalsa as a case study

Latest news making the rounds, the promotional news being reported by Tollywoodcentral.com, is that 1000s of 7 feet Jalsa cut-outs have been diJalsa gamesspatched by Geetha Arts, the producers, to the exhibitors as part of the promotion campaign. The mobile video games is also a cool idea! A delight for fans of Pawan Kalyan, but for those who understand marketing of films this is just a drop in the bucket.

Several Chiranjeevi-Pawan Kalyan fans often feel that compared to other stars their star’s film indulges in little promotion campaigns. AndarivaduJalsa gamess failure is attributed to Allu Arvind’s poor promotion while on the other hand i remember an interview of Aswini Dutt for Jeevi of idlebrain.com where Jeevi asked him what was the need for such extensive publicity for Indra as Chiranjeevi’s presence itself is enough. There is a fine line between marketing, publicity and promotion even as there is a tendency to use them interchangeably (the later two are more fused).

For example, Shahrukh Khan’s Om Shanthi Om, had all three components. It was marketed well—everybody knew what the movie is about: that it was a movie set in the 70’s about the film industry and that audience were just suppose to come and have fun; audience also knew it was a tribute to old-time masalsa bollywood blockbusters. OSO was heavily publicized through all forms of media, corporate partners, brands and promoted before and even after the movie (so much so that SRK received falk from BCCI for wearing OSO-shirts and distributing OSO music CD; now that is too much).

Now coming to Jalsa……

Due to heavy traffic on this blog and to address certain technical difficulties the remaining of this article will be available at http://www.tollywoodcentral.com/originals_article.php?id=48 . Thank you for your continued support.

The Voice of Mahesh Babu and Star Status for Trivikram

There is also news doing the rounds that Prince Mahesh Babu give lend his voice for the introductory scenes of the movie where he talks about his friend who is the main protagonist in the movie. This is adding to the jalsa of the film, but we must observe here that this is a statement that Trivikram is making.

If this rumor does materialize then Trivikram will rise to the star status of the likes of Karan Johar and will come the closest to making rivals work together. Fans of Mahesh Babu and Pawan Kalyan have always been engaged in a bitter dispute about their respective idol’s industry status (particularly post-Pokiri vs Bangaram clash). Pawan Kalyan fans are betting that this movie must beat the records set by Pokiri. So if it does beat or does not beat in the context of Mahesh lending support to Pawan Kalyan? Must all the rivalry and competition end? While several websites have written that this is a healthy trend like in Bollywood, rivalry will remain. A friend of mine and a Chiru-Pawan fan appreciated this gesture by Mahesh, but i posed a question for him: how will you reach if NTR jr. lent his voice for Chiru’s movie? or vice-versa?–No answer.

It is Trivikram Srinivas who will emerge the biggest star making a statement that he can bring two rivals together. Trivikram will emerge as a director who is above Stars. It could also be at attempt by Allu Arvind to bring both the factions together, which are mostly youth, as the political atmosphere heats up and youth wings will be doing most of the work. If you remember, it was reported initially that it is important for Chiru camp to harness the power of all other youth fan groups and right now Mahesh Babu has tremendous youth following.

Whatever may be the reason, Trivikram will be the man! Who knows, maybe he will give us Tollywood’s Karan-Arjun with Pawan Kalyan and Mahesh Babu; not a bad idea at all…ah?!
